The project in Viet Nam was used hydraulic road binders and building roadways using local resource such as soils and aggregates.
In North Viet Nam, UPIC (Previously known as Pavement Design Solutions Limited) developed a simple technique for blending hydraulic bound materials for road building. The soils require being dug so that they have natural moist content, a specific strength class of hydraulic binder is used for road construction in North Viet Nam. With an existing soil roadway the surface soil is dug out and the hydraulic bound material placed in one layer between 15 cm and 20 cm in thickness.
A lorry deposits material on the ground and local labour spreads the single layer of hydraulic bound material. A 10 tonne static steel wheeled roller is used to compact the material layer. After initial compaction stone chippings are spread over the surface of the partially compacted material layer. The final compaction of the layer pushes the stone chippings into the surface of the single material layer. The chippings provide a surface to the material layer. Vehicle can use the roadway immediately after compaction is finished.
